Professional Growth Plan
In second grade, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and I wrote about being a teacher. I had made many connections with my teachers as I was a chatty student that enjoyed helping my peers with their work. By seventh grade, we had been asked again and I entertained the idea of a career involved in helping people. Come high school, I wanted to be a school councillor, which stuck until university.
I went to MacEwan University for a year in the hopes of obtaining my Bachelors of Psychology. I quickly realized how popular that path was and I found myself struggling in this unfamiliar, busy environment. I decided that I needed to create a new plan for myself and in doing so, I was told that sometimes, we have to start with a job we like rather than our dream job. Shortly after, I applied to Lakeland College’s University Transfer Program in the hopes of starting my journey towards my Bachelors of Education.
I am extremely happy with my decision to pusue teaching. My growth plan starts in the classroom, gaining experience alonside students. Currently, my plan involves teaching first and eventually going back to school for my Bachelors of Psychology and possibly my masters. Even as a teacher, you are still learning and I believe having this experience in the classroom will help with my future as a school councillor. Having the knowledge of student-teacher dynamics will play a vital role in creating plans for struggling students. Experiencing students day to day life and knowing teacher resources will also help with school councillor tasks.
